A Titus Two Example
We left bright and early this morning before the sun came up to drive my father and mother-in-love back to the airport. We were blessed to have them for a week long visit, except for the 2 days and one night that they spent at their older son’s home. It was a nice relaxing week full of lots of chatting and lots of food!
Grandpa was a butcher for years. He bought a lamb and had it butchered while he was here. (He has a hard time finding lamb in Missouri). We packed it in dry ice so he could take it home on the plane. We were able to have leg of lamb with mint jelly for one of our meals. Yum! Here Grandpa is taking a vein out that could cause the meat to taste bad. He left 6 packages of lamb in our freezer. Yeah!
We spent an afternoon watching the movie that came out this year called “Esther” (very disappointing because they didn’t stick to scripture) and Luther. Hubbins and I have seen Luther before and really liked it. We had lots of talks around the dinner table about the end times and Jesus return. Grandpa was a preacher at one time so we always enjoy hearing his viewpoint. One afternoon we drove to town so they could visit their great-grandchildren.
Other than that, I had a lot of time to visit with my mother-in-love which I always enjoy. Geneva has lived a fascinating life. She was raised on a river in Arkansas as a child. She came from a large family. They lived off the land and fished for huge turtles in the river for meat. Everything they ate was either grown or caught. Her mother was a devout Christian but her father did not come to know the Lord until he was close to death. Geneva can remember, as a small child, watching her mother pray and interceed for her husband after he left for work each morning. Geneva helped to lead him to the Lord before he died. I could go on and on with the stories she has shared but the most delightful thing about Geneva is that she is a true example of a Titus 2 older woman.
Geneva and I had a lot of time to visit while we prepared our daily meals in the kitchen. One day she was talking about her husband and said, “I do whatever he tells me to”. I knew that she didn’t mean she would follow him into sin. I’ve known her long enough to know that. I thought about her words a lot in the days that followed and what a godly example of an older Titus 2 woman she has always been to me. I’ve heard Geneva give suggestions to her husband and offer her advice if she feels she can offer some help in his decisions but in the end she does what he asks her to do in a respectful manner. She brings glory to God because of her submission.
I asked her where she first learned that God’s Word taught she was to submit to her husband. She said that submission was taught from their pulpit when she was younger and that she was thankful for it. Not many churches teach on submission today. I’m grately to attend a church that does not back down from this truth even though it’s not a popular teaching in the church today. (http://www.xanga.com/jehovahraah83/)
I’ve never heard Geneva raise her voice at her husband but she always responds to him with respect. (Eph. 5:33) She has always been a living example of each of the things an older woman is told to teach the younger women. .. not in words only but by her actions, too.
Titus 2:3-5
Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
I’m grateful God has given me a godly mother-in-love in Geneva.

Oh, it’s great to hear about Geneva. What a blessing. She sounds like a very special woman.
I thank God for the older women in my life who have taught me so much by their example. I would like to be that sort of woman some day, too!
What a blessing you week was…and they left lamb, too! You’ve given me a craving! We also watched, “A Night with the King” and were disappointed. Then we watched “Facing the Giants”, very good movie, we could have skipped the first one. Thanks for sharing Geneva with us…a good reminder and it’s also encouraging to see elders in the process of finishing well!
Geneva sounds like someone I would like to know.
I have found lamb at a small Mexican grocery store here in Indiana. It’s cheaper than at the regular grocery store (which almost never has any), and they will cut it anyway I want. I usually buy a leg, and use sign language to show them how to cut it, since I don’t speak Spanish. My husband loves lamb.
I have never ate lamb. I don’t know if I would like it or not. You are so blessed to have a mother-in-love like Geneva.
What a wonderful post! Your in laws look and sound so sweet…I’m sure you have been blessed by them.
I have a few minutes to sit, so I just browsed through your past few posts. Well…it’s just nice to visit with you Georgene!
Good words!
Just wanted to come by and tell you thank you for the nice comment on my site. You are welcome back anytime…Kelly
She sounds like a wonderful woman.
Thanks for your comment. When God comes in us and does HIS work, that work immediately looks out to reach others. When we start looking thru our “own eyes” we easily get distracted. Other people’s expectations can also distract from what God is wanting to do thru us. I f we get it wrong to where we like what it feels like to do good works, or the enjoyment of the attention others give us while doing the works, we turn to works to save us – which isn’t God working in us, but us working.
BUT….what is the greater works than these in John 14:12? To me that was the Ultimate Work. It seems lilke we wouldn’t even want our work to be compared to His. If you have a work on that, I’d love to hear it. Thanks for your response.
It sounds like you had a wonderful time and I’m glad you did. It’s always great to be able to fellowship with someone older and wiser, who desires to serve the Lord and teach it, as well. I agree submission is something all of us women should learn more about in our daily walk with the Lord. Thanks for sharing!
What a blessing to have been taught by a Titus woman! I can say that this is something not preached in my church, but is something our womens ministry has attempted. I was a part of MOPS so many years ago, and we had a titus 2 woman, come and speak to us about our roles as wife and mother. The Lord has blessed my daughters with a church that teaches biblical marriage-if that makes sense, and I know they will be blessed ubundantly because of their desire to follow Gods plan for their marriage-and future marriage ( one is married, the other is hoping!)
Glad you all had a good visit. I haven’t heard much about submission in any church service. I wonder why???? enjoyed your post. Dawn I have been wanting to cook a lamb. The last time I had it I was in Germany and it was wonderful.
What a visit. It took me a long time to realize that submission was a good thing – I grew up in a home with abusive parents, so had to submit to them and it hurt. But knowing that we are to submit to our husbands, but our husbands are to love us AS CHRIST LOVED THE CHURCH, puts a whole different spin on submission.

Hi Georgene! RYC: I remember reading in Piper’s Desiring God (the only book of his I’ve read) about God’s glory. At http://www.desiringgod.org/dg/id6.htm under the heading God Delights in His Glory in Chapter 1 (if you want to check it out), Piper refers to concepts that I have to work really hard at wrapping my mind around!
Anyway, that peaked my interest and also let me know how little I really knew about the glory of God. Line upon line, precept upon precept, God is faithful to teach us, isn’t He? Nice desiring God with you! ~Pam
What a wonderful relationship with your in-laws…especially your mother in-law!! I have been close to both my in-laws for years and years. It helps when they live right behind us! It is so nice to have an older woman to just talk to….it really helps fulfill some needs I have in my own life.
What a blessing!! Thanks for sharing…
I am glad that you had a good visit. That is the first time I heard in-laws refered to as in-love especially the mother-in-law:) I am glad that you have a wonderful relationship with them. That is a great blessing. Yes, we need more Titus 2 women.
Today is our retreat. Please pray that God will be at work.
