  • 2nd Day in D.C.

We covered a lot of ground today and my ‘feetsies’ are talking to me about it!

We are feeling very smug because we’ve figured out the metro and bus system. Yeah! We were able to get to D.C. and home just fine with no problems. Here is a picture of the metro under ground at the Pentagon station. I’m not sure who the people are but you can see the train in the back. The trains FLY by each other sooo fast. It scared me the first time it happened. I’m such a country bumpkin and not used to life in the fast lane.

We took the metro to Arlington Cemetery. I was unprepared to see 300,000 tombs that spread as far as the eye could see.  The freedom of our nation has not come without a high cost.

This was President John F. Kennedy’s grave. His wife asked for an eternal flame to burn at his grave site similar to the one in Paris for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I was expecting a big monument over his tomb. I liked the simplicity of the grave site.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The weather was extremely hot and humid today. I felt so sorry for the soldiers because they were dressed in a uniform along with gloves and a hat. Each soldier guards the tomb for 2 hours before they change guards. The tomb is guarded 24 hours a day.. rain or shine… day and night. We were able to witness the ‘changing of the guards’. No talking was allowed… only silence in respect for the soldiers who lost their lives. Hubbin’s saw one of the soldiers that was on guard today interviewed on Fox News a few weeks ago and he said that he considered this the most important thing he has ever done.

Next stop was the White House. We saw the front and the back grounds and house which both were heavily guarded. Lots of construction going on to make it much safer from attack. There were 8 men playing hockey in front of the White House and behind them was a protestor of nuclear arms. Interesting backdrop! Notice my bright pink hat? Hubbin’s and I hunted for some kind of hat last night to keep the sun off our faces. It helped a lot today even if I do look like a pink flamingo! This was near the end of the day and I was getting worn out from all our walking and feeling very OLD!

I tried to get a tour through the White House 2 months ago but was denied.  I was told the White House receives 30,000 requests a week. So, instead we visited the White House Visitors Center. There was picture after picture of the fancy rooms in the White House but this was my favorite. It’s a picture of laundry being hung in one of the rooms of the White House back in the 1800′s. I like that thought!

We ‘hoofed’ it over to the National Archives building which was 4 blocks away. We stood in line about 30 minutes out front and then another 20 minutes inside to see the Constitution, Bill of Rights, etc. The funniest thing happened. The person who was organizing the ‘crowd’ to enter the archives of documents  tried to pass our time while we were waiting by asking where we were from. She asked who was from the West Coast  and of course Kevin and I lifted our hands. She asked ‘where’ and when we told her she said,’My Grandma lives there!’ Come to find out we go to church with her Grandma! It really is a small world, isn’t it? She was so excited that we knew her Grandma and gave us a big hug to pass on  when we get home… which we will!

That’s all for today! We ate at a Thai restaurant next to the hotel which was really good! We’ll both sleep well tonight. Our plan (not sure if it’s the Lord’s) is to see the Smithsonian museum’s tomorrow. I wish we could find a church to go to first. It’s going to feel strange not attending a worship service. I already miss my church!

    Hope everyone is doing well!
    Love to everyone!

  • you are having a great adventure- praying for hubby to rest and feel up to par- huggles me,

  • Oh, I would love to take that trip. I’ve never been there, but I wouldn’t go in the summer heat. I would be dieing. I responded to your comment on my blog today. I put it there because I thought some other people might be interested. I hope you hubby is really enjoying himself. Don’t get too hot and tired. My dd was there and took and evening tour everything has lights and it was beautiful.

  • What a great time you are having!  I love to visit historical places and whoo hoo, you figured out the metro!  You go girl!

  • Living in DE … so close to DC … we often went when our children were younger and enjoyed using the Metro.  Your pictures are bringing back lots of good memories.  About your comment on my site, I am on the Gerson Therapy (Baja Nutri Care Clinic in Mexico), so our lunch was salt-free, organic, and no animal products of any kind.  We had a special soup that’s a detox for kidneys, baked potatoes, pickled beets, celery sticks, corn (the only non-organic item a friend gave us … and I did not eat), and applesauce.  I put unsalted butter, salt and pepper on the table for them, though of course we never use it.  I’m to use only Flax Oil.  We have lots of other options, too, as long as they are organic and fresh fruits or vegetables.

  • Thanks for sharing all those great pictures! We girls do what we have to do-pink hat and all! I’ve read an email about the dedication of the unknown soldier guards. Its moving because they are very dedicated to their job!

  • I’m sure enjoying your photos….I have a goal to take the children sometime soon. So maybe I can get some great ideas from you on the do’s & don’ts, when you’re through.
I loved the personal tidbit about the lady’s grandma. God had that planned, didn’t He?
Enjoy the time with your hubby!
    God bless~ E

  • RYC:  Yes, we’ve been to the clinic twice.  Once in October of 2004 and again in April of 2005.  Did you look up the clinic?  There’s pictures on site, I believe.  It’s in a beautiful area of lovely homes … once was a home itself.  Has private rooms and baths for 10 clients at a time, complete with ‘safe’ pool, treated with hydrogen peroxide instead of chlorine, fountains, outdoor gliders and chairs, a dining room where all eat together, a lovely relaxing ‘retreat’ for the sick, not just with cancer.  The last time we were there, so was a man from Ireland.  Could find nothing wrong, but came for detoxing and cleansing, to learn how to better take care of himself before a major setback. Smart man, husband, father.

  • Oh, and there is a book entitled, The Gerson Therapy, written my Dr. Max Gerson’s daughter Charlotte Gerson and a Dr. David Morton, I believe.  Lots of recipes in the back of that book.

  • What a wonderful time you’re having. I’m sure the historical heritage we have it often forgotten altogether or taken for granted. We do have a lot to be thankful for. No matter what modern social specialist say, our nation was founded “under God.” The “pink flamingo” looks very spry. Not like an old woman at all.

  • Thanks for sharing your trip with us; the pictures are delightful!  We’ve never been that far east, but I know I would enjoy the history of that area.

Thanks for the kind comments; I’m slowly rising from the walking dead.  God is good!

  • Thanks for showing us the pictures :)   Sounds like such a great trip.  Wonderful about figuring out the buses and subways, that is not always easy in my opinion!

  • Wow, how exciting! Have fun tomorrow! God bless you and your family. Andrea

  • Thank you so much for taking me on vacation with you.  We will not get one this year ourselves so I really am enjoying yours.

  • Enjoyed your pictures, thanks for sharing. Hope your hubby is feeling better each day.

  • I have been to D. C. once and only for a part of a day…it was to deposit one of my sons there for a 3 month internship with our senator…I really wanted to take all 4 kids sometime before they grew up…but that never seemed to materialize….so…now I’m thinking I need my son to take me on a tour…then I’ll be prepared to take my granddaughter someday :)

  • I have to amend that comment…I was in D. C. one other time for the night…I can’t seem to stay there for even 24 hours at a time :)

  • I wished for a hat the other day on the beach so I know the feeling! My face looks like a pink flamingo at this point. ~Irene

  • Looks like you’re having a fun and humid time!  : )

Thanks for leaving a couple of notes on my xanga…  I haven’t been doing an active study in it yet. Yesterday’s Sunday School kind of got me going. I’ve been thinking about it a lot, though. It would be great to drag out a buch of commentaries and “figure it out”, but time does not allow that to happen all in once sitting. A little at a time, I guess. I will keep posting as I find scripture that applies.

Have a wonderful rest of your trip!

  • I use to live near Washington. My dad worked for the Arlington  Country PD. I can remember when the metro was being built we never thought it would be done.  I feel every Amereican should go see Arlington Nation Cemetery and know that freedom is not FREE. I am glad you are sharing your pictures.  I have been through the White House and they roll up the carpets and you walk through a few rooms and they tell you this is the blue room well DUH the room is blue,  same for the red room etc.  It was ok but it was neat saying I have been there and done that.  enjoy your visit.  the Smithsonian would be at the top of my list to see  even over the White House.  If at all possible you need to go there, it will take SEVERAL days to see it all. God bless and keep the great info coming.  piggie

  • Thanks for showing us your pictures. Sounds like you are enjoying your trip very much!  About the Bread Pudding recipe, I’m going to have to modify it with Splenda and healthier ingredients as I am type 2 diabetic. Thank you for sharing that site with me; I’ll be sure to check it out!
