I love this site. The page below has calculators that will tell you things like whether it’s cheaper to run a floor fan or your air conditioner. I was amazed to see how inexpensive it is to use your ceiling fans. It was also interesting to see that it’s cheaper to use a space heater for one room rather than run the CH/A. I always thought space heaters cost a fortune!

The only thing I couldn’t find was information on dishwashers vs. washing by hand. I would LOVE for someone to convince me that I could go back to using my dishwasher instead of washing by hand. I just haven’t found any proof yet.

Anyway, I hope you find this site helpful. Scroll down until you see the calculator.

  • Here in Denmark, we have registers in each room which can be turned on or off. We do not heat our bedroom, and we have found that the office usually stays warm enough with just the heat generated by two computers and monitors. I keep the heat turned low in the kitchen, because it stays pretty warm there with cooking. Basically, we heat the living area, and the bathroom. All our rooms have doors which allow them to be closed off, and this is very helpful. We keep all the doors closed in the Winter so we don’t have to heat the hall. Depending on how you do dishes, the dish washer may save you money. I always rinse mine under hot running water, and I know this is more expensive. We live in a second floor apartment with people over us, under us, and on both sides. This is nice, because they help to heat our apartment!

  • I can help!  I did a lot of research and posted on dishwashers vs. washing by hand (and other kitchen appliances) last spring.  The DW is the most energy-intensive appliance in the kitchen that you can really make a difference on.  Here are two posts for your enjoyment:
