  • Frugal Friday: How to give a haircut

    frugalfriday

I’ve been cutting my families hair for over 30 years. I first taught myself to cut hair with my youngest son when he was just a baby. I had a friend teach me a few more techniques when my children were older so I was then able to cut my husband’s hair. I’ve saved us a ton of money. I  will oftentimes trim my own hair inbetween hair appointments just to extend my haircut a couple of weeks.

Meet my handsome assistant…. Mr K.

Step One: I started at the back of the neck. I combed most of the hair up so that there was just a thin layer of hair at the base of the neck. I made a cut for my guideline and then used that guideline to cut the hair up to the crown.

Step Two: Pull the hair straight out and cut using the baseline cut on the back of the neck as your guide.

Step 3: Make your first cut at the front. Use this cut as your guideline. Pull up a thin layer of hair behind the guideline and cut to match the guideline cut.  Continue this technique until you hit the crown.

Step 4: Decide where you want the hair over the ears and make your guideline cut. Use this as your guide and work up to the crown pulling the hair out to the side.

Step 5: Comb the hair over the ears towards the eyes and cut as shown.

    Step 6: Shave the neck

    Doesn’t he look nice?

It helps if you can practice on a young child first. I also found instructional videos on U Tube which looked  helpful.

I hope I explained this clearly.

  • Wow!  It looks professional, Georgene.  I can buzz cut but I have a friend of mine who is a single Mom cut Cody’s hair and do my haircut/color and highlight.  I could color my own but she uses professional products and charges me so little and I like to help her out.

  • I always have cut and permed my own hair. I used to also cut my hubby’s, but he has very thick, straight hair, and it took me forever! Now he has clippers, and thinning shears and he does most of it himself. I just help with the back. About once a year he goes to someone else and has the back evened up. So, we also save a lot! Your handsome assistant’s hair looks great! Good job!

  • I too, have often cut my husband’s hair, and my kids.  Now a friend cuts his, and sometimes mine.  Once in awhile I cut my own, and once in awhile I have it cut professionally.  The real question is………”How do you cut a 1 yr. old’s bangs?”  I cut Ella’s this week  and got them too short and crooked besides.  Oh well, they will grow.PS I don’t think there’s a good answer to that question.

  • @ata_grandma - I think trying to cut a one year old’s bangs is like trying to herd ANTS. You’re right.. there’s no good answer. LOL!!! Hope you have a good week.

  • Great post!  Wonderful way to save $.

  • I,(reluctantly)started cutting my husband’s hair after our youngest daughter got married.I use a clippers and usually it turns out okay.I had one bad experience or should I say my husband did. I had taken off the attachment to trim along the back of his neck and seeing a few stray hairs up towards the top of his head decided to remove them.Well I made a nice size patch of VERY short hair.He was a good sport and laughed while I cried. He wore a cap during the week and for church I colored it in with eyeliner pencil.

  • His haircut looks terrific!  I cut my husband’s hair and my son’s, as well.  My son’s hair is very thick and straight, so it’s a bit of a challenge.  But it also grows rapidly, and I’d rather not pay for haircuts every month.  That was the incentive for me to learn!

  • Just wanted to say hi. You did a great job on the haircut.

  • The haircut looks great! My mom happened to see it, and she said to say thank you for sharing. She has tried to cut my dad’s hair for awhile, but it didn’t look as professional as it could. She is going to try the guidelines next time; that is where she hasn’t know what to do.

  • I think you do a fantastic job – and I used to do hair professionally a long time ago, before marriage & kids, lol.  Seriously, it looks great!  I’ve saved a ton of money doing my kids & hubby for all these years, too.   Great frugal Friday tip!  :)

  • @Mrs_LeFevour - I have a friend who does my hair, too, for a fraction of the cost. I’m blessed. How are you? Some Friday or Saturday can we go garage saling?

  • Yes indeed we can, though I have to admit without Jessica, it’s not the same.  I hold my own, though!  Love you.
