  • I may be fooling myself but I think I’m on top of the holiday ‘doings’. I finished up my Christmas shopping this week. I’ve sent out my Christmas cards. The family recipes books came back from the printer yesterday. I really like the way they turned out! I’ll try and post a picture of the front and back cover.  I’m wrapping those to ship today to family out of state. All I have left to do is wrap gifts, finish sewing the grandchildren’s pj’s and prepare for our Christmas meal. I dropped making candy trays this year so that saved me an enormous amount of time. I really miss making all the goodies but my blood sugar was at a pre-diabetic stage a few months back so I’ve had to stay away from all sweets. It’s lowered now and I’m really trying to be good. I’ll make up a bunch of goodies for Christmas day and enjoy it just that one day and then out it goes! Husband raises his eyebrows when I say so! We’ll see! My grown kids are watching their weight, too, so I’m helping them by not baking up a ton of stuff.

It has really helped to evaluate all I’ve been doing in years past for the holidays and to eliminate what wasn’t absolutely necessary. My side of the family picks names and my grown children decided to pick names this year, too, so that has cut way back on shopping.

It’s been such a nice change of pace. I’m really enjoying the season. For the most part, my heart has been at peace!

I’ve been talking to the grandchildren a lot about Christ’s birth. My husband will read the Christmas story to everyone on Christmas day, as is our tradition. I have  a lighted nativity scene in front of our home which the grandchildren helped me set up. We talked about the names of each of the figures. I also have several nativities in the home… one at eye level so they can pick it up and touch it. I’ll see if I can post a picture of it, too. There is a lighted STAR OF DAVID in the window and we talk about how the wise men followed the star to the baby Jesus many, many years ago. I also bought some $1.00 CD’s with only religious Christmas songs for adults and one for children. We’ll practice learning these songs.

I love sharing Jesus with my grandchildren.

  • Those babies are so blessed to have a grandmother like you!

  • Hey Georgene,

If you are not the Georgene I think you are, then you have a spiritual and personality “twin” living in northern Central California.  Do you recognize the handsome young man in my site pic?  If you know me, you will know him. Just picture him without the beard and apron…

I found your site browsing the “A Day in the Life of Christian Homemakers” blogring.

  • That cookbook looks lovely and is such a thoughtful present.  I think it’s great you are watching what you eat during this season, as I think we should all watch what we eat all year long.  I say that while I have to lose weight myself and am not practicing what I am preaching even though I should!

  • We were out today and there was candy and goodies everywhere. I started to feel a little deprived, but only a little. It’s just hard sometimes to change your habits and certain things become traditional. We associate food so much with holidays. I’m having to put the food on the back burner. I guess it’s an opportunity to put food in it’s proper place, if you know what I mean.

  • Hello there, Auntie Grandma Marmie Georgene!   (This is Suz B.)

Glad to see you’ve got a xanga!

  • I am so glad your heart is at peace and you can really relax and enjoy this season :0) I am still working on it, but I think it comes with maturity (and I don’t mean ‘age’ necessarily :)  and growth. Yes, I still have more maturing and growing, but It is all a process that I know the Lord steering me through. He is so good to help us weed things out. The cookbook is such a great idea, too! Grace and peace to you!!!

  • How neat!

Hey, we’d love it if you decided to share some of the family recipes with us!! :)

It’s wonderful you are able to enjoy the Christmas season :)

  • The cook book looks great. What a neat idea to hand down all the “family favorites” (a pinch of this, a smidge of that.) thats the way I usually cook. Don’t do a whole lot since its only my babies (a dashund Rusty 16,a yorkie Rascal 2 & a kitten Sassy Belle,3mo.) Its great you are watching the high calorie goodies this year. My friend has diabetes and has to watch what she eats, so not only do we have to watch the sugar intake but the carbohydrates as well. Have a blessed week & God keep you safe.  HUGS

  • Hope you are having a good day!

I think it is wonderful that you are talking to your grandbabies about the Lord … they will remember this for the rest of their lives …

We tell the story of Jesus’ birth every year on Christmas Eve … we all gather in the living room and dad tells the story and then we pray … then we let the kids open one gift each … just a little family tradition!

    Blessings to you!

  • i too bake from family recipes. i used to make about 15 different things in double batches and store them out in thegarage in cabinets to keep them cold, but not frozen. then i’d plate them up for relatives and friends and neighbors as gifts.  but, alas, it costs too much and iv’e moved and don’t have so much family around, so now i just do a few special ones and we enjoy them instead.  but, just as much.  it’s a lot of work too!

my daughteer will be home from her mission trip to Thailand on thursday. i expect that after 7 months, we will have a lot of catching up to do. i’m trying to get things done for christmas early myself, before she comes in, so we can enjoy the time we have before she has to go back to school again just after new years.

well, i hope this note finds you well!  and i hope to hear from you again soon! -bette
